Overcoming Key Challenges of the Printing and Coating Industry
----------------------------------------------------------------

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released during the coating, printing, painting, and laminating of surfaces, as well as during downstream drying and curing. These emissions must be safely and reliably treated to comply with environmental regulations and protect operations. At the same time, efficient air pollution control is essential for maintaining competitiveness and reducing operating costs. By integrating our air pollution control solutions into your existing plant infrastructure, we help improve energy efficiency while delivering consistently high purification performance. With customized technologies, engineering expertise, and comprehensive lifecycle services, Envanio supports the printing and coating industry worldwide in managing process emissions safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

### Large Exhaust Air Volumes with Low Concentrations

Surface treatment processes frequently generate high-volume exhaust streams with relatively low solvent concentrations. Envanio pairs adsorptive VOC concentrators with downstream thermal oxidizers to concentrate the exhaust volume first, dramatically reducing the energy required for destruction.

### Reducing the Carbon Footprint

Chemical manufacturing frequently generates exhaust streams and waste liquids containing corrosive substances such as halogen compounds or sulfur-bearing substances. With a wide selection of corrosive-resistant material and robust thermal processes, Envanio systems safely and efficiently treat even complex, corrosive emissions.

### Complex and Dynamic Process Conditions

In production environments with multiple lines operating in parallel and frequent job changeovers, exhaust air volumes and solvent emissions fluctuate significantly. That’s why Envanio designs systems that have proven effective in complex and dynamic process and operating conditions.

Key Surface Treatment Applications Requiring Air Pollution Control
--------------------------------------------------------------------

 ###### Printing Industry

Significant volumes of volatile organic compounds are generated during the printing and drying in flexographic and rotogravure operations. To treat exhaust air from printing flexible packaging, labels, cigarette paper, banknotes, wallpaper, and specialty substrates – as well as heatset web offset printing and screen printing lines – Envanio offers proven RTO systems compatible with both individual presses and plant-wide exhaust headers.

###### Coating and Converting Industry

Roll-to-roll processes such as coating, laminating, lacquering, and bonding releases high solvent loads because the entire web surface is treated. Applications involving plastic films, aluminum foils, adhesive labels, decorative laminates, and technical textiles provide ideal conditions for the autothermal operation of our regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO). Through multi-stage energy recovery, a large portion of the heat contained in the exhaust air can be harnessed for production processes or plant utilities, transforming the abatement system from an energy consumer into an energy supplier.

###### Metal Packaging

Printing and coating metal substrates presents distinct air pollutions control challenges, as specialty lacquers, overspray particulates, and high-temperature curing ovens require tailored filtration and abatement. For the production of beverage and food cans, collapsible tubes, drums, and continuous coil coating lines, Envanio designs rugged RTO systems that ensure efficient, reliable air purification under demanding operating conditions.

###### Spray Booths

Coating molded and structural parts in spray booths generates high volumes of exhaust air with low VOC concentrations. For cost-effective treatment, Envanio pairs adsorptive VOC concentration systems (rotor concentrators) with recuperative or regenerative thermal oxidizers. This configuration efficiently treats air volumes exceeding several 100,000 m³/h for automotive suppliers and manufacturers of furniture, plastics, household appliances, and wind turbine towers.

Suitable Systems for the Printing and Coating Industry
--------------------------------------------------------

Air pollution control requirements for the printing and coating industry vary based on your specific production process, exhaust air flow rates, and regional regulatory standards. Envanio offers both standardized and custom-engineered systems designed to meet your specific operational needs and adapt to changing production parameters, drawing from a broad portfolio of field-proven technologies.

### Regenerative Thermal Oxidation

Regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) is a highly efficient process that cleans industrial exhaust by destroying hazardous air pollutants (VOCs and HAPs) and eliminating unpleasant odors. By using internal ceramic heat exchange media, the system traps and recycles its own heat, making the entire purification process incredibly energy efficient.

### Electric Regenerative Thermal Oxidation

Envanio's electrically heated regenerative thermal oxidizer (eRTO) combines high VOC destruction efficiency, operational reliability, and exceptional energy performance. By using electric heating elements instead of gas-fired burners, the system avoids combustion-related byproducts and significantly reduces NOₓ emissions. The result is a cleaner, more sustainable solution for industrial air pollution control.

### Recuperative Thermal Oxidation

Recuperative thermal oxidation is a highly efficient process that cleans industrial exhaust air by destroying hazardous air pollutants (VOCs and HAPs) and eliminating unpleasant odors. The system is also well suited for processes where particulate matter and aerosols are generated. An integrated metallic shell-and-tube heat exchanger enables efficient primary heat recovery.

![VOC Concentration](https://www.envanio.com/fileadmin/_processed_/a/e/csm_Envanio_VOC_Concentration_Sorpt.X_CD_2a5623fd29.webp "VOC Concentration")

### VOC Concentration

Envanio’s VOC concentration process uses adsorption to concentrate dilute solvent emissions. For cost-effective air pollution control, adsorption is recommended first to concentrate large exhaust airflows with low pollutant loads. The concentrated exhaust air is then routed to downstream recuperative or regenerative thermal oxidation for highly energy-efficient destruction.
